From Humble Beginnings to Business Success

My name is Paul Nicolau, known to many as Pescobar, and my journey embodies the Romanian version of the “American Dream.” I was born in a normal family which grew me with a lot of ambition and a relentless work ethic that has defined my path to success.

As a child, I displayed early signs of entrepreneurial spirit and while formal education took me through three different university programs, I found my true calling in the world of business and decided to focus on building my future through hands-on experience rather than academic credentials.

In my professional journey which began in direct sales I learned valuable lessons about customer relationships and business operations. However, it was my passion for quality food and authentic experiences that eventually led me to the restaurant industry.

I started what would become Taverna Racilor with nothing more than a simple idea: bringing premium crayfish to Romanian tables. Initially, I personally caught and sold the crayfish. The business grew organically, starting with the Crayfish Festival that attracted thousands of Bucharest residents and featured around 5 tons of crayfish at a single event. The rest is history.

Today, my business portfolio has expanded to include 13 Taverna Racilor restaurants across Romania and internationally, the Fish to Door online platform, a partnership in Academia Adrian Mutu, and a future Welness Hotel venture among other smaller and full of potential ventures. What began as a one-man operation has grown to employ over 350 people and generate annual revenues exceeding 25 million euros.

My Guiding Principles

My life and business philosophy can be summarized in five powerful words: “God, faith, work, dream, madness.” I believe that success requires not only hard work and vision but also faith in something greater than yourself and the courage to pursue seemingly impossible dreams.

I’m known for saying, “I work a lot” , even if people say I travel to luxury destinations and they only see the fun part. “Everywhere I put my hand on my body, it hurts. Success comes with a lot of effort.” These aren’t just words—they reflect my daily commitment to excellence and growth.

What sets my approach apart is an unwavering focus on quality and authenticity. I believe in creating genuine experiences for customers and building businesses that deliver real value, not just profit. This commitment to excellence has allowed my ventures to thrive even in challenging economic conditions.
